On the Machine

Every FaXto record (so far) is made with generative AI. Here is what that means, plainly.

The music. The compositions, arrangements, and vocals you hear are generated with Suno, an AI music tool, from written prompts and lyrics — then selected, shaped, and sequenced into finished records. I turned to generative AI for a plain reason: I have no musical training. I cannot play an instrument, and I cannot sing. But I can think, and I can curate sound and ideas until they say what I mean. The albums are built in sevens, after a set of tenets I try to live by.

The human part. The words — the lyrics, the titles, the whole absurdist liturgy — and the direction, curation, and final assembly are mine. The machine is the instrument. FaXto is the choices made around it. My creations are drawn from my own life — above all, deconstructing years of religious indoctrination. The words reflect the absurdity of existence through the lens of the Grand Cosmic Void; after all, we are “made” of atoms, and atoms are mostly empty space…

Why say so.AI music raises real questions about authorship and craft, and I would rather answer them up front than pretend otherwise. This is a collaboration with a machine, offered without disguise. Everything here I have made myself — with the machines' help — including this website. There are imperfections in the work, but I believe they are an essential part of this deeply personal journey of making art. If that shapes how you hear it, good — that is part of the work.
